This is the first of two posts about what we’ve done this week. I decided to let the girls have some control over what we’re studying. I let them build a list of interests and we picked one from the list. Morgan and Cara were all about Halloween, so that’s what we chose.
I loaded an assignment onto Google Classroom with some guiding questions for the girls to research. These questions included:
- Where did most of our Halloween traditions originate?
- What were the first Jack O’Lanterns made of?
- What other cultures have celebrations that are similar to Halloween? Tell me about them.
- What is the origin of Trick or Treat? Why did people dress up on Halloween?
The girls were very excited about this for the first twenty minutes of research. The collective “EWWW” when they found pictures of turnips carved as Jack O’Lanterns was hilarious, too. That’s where the fun ended, though. The goal was writing a blog entry about what they learned about Halloween. I spent two and a half hours fighting them when it came time to write their blogs and answers they were able to answer verbally had a difficult time being recorded in the blog.
They did eventually get enough to shut me up, but we’re going to be working on writing paragraphs for a while, I think. It’s very disheartening to find them unable to write something as simple as a couple of paragraphs.
I’m not giving in that easy, though!
